What this solves
"Day trip to Zion and Bryce from Vegas" sounds like a checklist item. The reality: driving 5 hours round-trip, walking another 8–12 km inside the canyon, and getting back to the Strip at 11 PM with sore feet. Most travelers underestimate the drive by 90 minutes because they trust Google Maps at 2 AM, not in a St. George construction zone.
This calculator takes your travel month, group size, and lodging tolerance, then tells you whether a Vegas-based day-trip is rational — or whether you should book one night in Springdale and split the parks across two days.
The day-trip vs overnight calculator
Drive-time reality (one-way, no traffic)
2h 30m
163 mi via I-15 N
4h 00m
272 mi via I-15 N + US-89
9h driving
+ park time + shuttle wait
5h driving
split across 2 days
Earlier = cooler temps in summer, later = more sleep but less park time.
Shuttle reality (Zion main canyon)
April–October, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private cars. You must take the mandatory shuttle from the visitor center. In peak months (May–September), the line can hit 60–90 minutes by 9 AM. The photo you saw? They were on the first shuttle at 6:30.
Photo entry vs reality
The Watchman, Angels Landing (permit-only since 2022), and the Narrows (wading required) are reachable. The overlooks you see on Pinterest are not on a 30-minute stop — most are 4–8 km round-trip hikes from shuttle stops.
How to read the result
- Verdict combines drive time, daylight hours remaining in the month, and your group's tolerance for an overnight. "Doable" still means a 14-hour day.
- Bryce elevation is 8,000–9,100 ft. Summer highs sit at 75–80°F but nights drop below freezing. Winter closes the Scenic Drive after storms; you can still see the amphitheater from the rim with tire chains.
- Zion shuttle is mandatory April 1–October 31 for the main canyon (Scenic Drive). You cannot drive your rental car past the visitor center in peak season. Off-season you can drive in — but winter has its own closures.
- One night in Springdale (the town outside Zion) is $150–$300 mid-range in 2026. Two nights lets you do a sunrise Watchman trail + a full Bryce day.
- Gas + park entry: Zion is $35/vehicle, Bryce is $35/vehicle. Interagency Annual Pass ($80) is worth it if you add a North Rim Grand Canyon day.
Limitations
- Drive times assume no I-15 traffic incidents. A single crash near Primm or Mesquite can add 90 minutes. Check NDOT before leaving.
- Bryce in winter (Nov–Mar) often has snow tire chain requirements on US-89 between Junction and Bryce — rental car contracts may prohibit chains.
- The calculator does not model the Zion reservation system (introduced 2024): in peak months you now need a timed entry reservation on top of the shuttle. As of 2026, the system is suspended for free, but reconfirm on the NPS site the week of your trip.
- Helicopter and Pink Jeep tours are not modeled — for those, see the Adventure Combo Math tool.
- Group dynamics (kids under 8, anyone with altitude sensitivity at Bryce) are not modeled past a simple "kids" flag. If anyone in your group has respiratory or cardiac conditions, Bryce at 9,000 ft is a real talk with a doctor first.
FAQ
Can I really do Zion AND Bryce in one day from Vegas?
Technically yes, starting at 5:30 AM and returning around 11 PM. Practically you get 90 minutes of usable time inside each park, and you spend more time in the car than on a trail. Most people who try this regret it.
Is Zion better than Bryce?
Different parks. Zion is a vertical slot canyon — you are in the canyon, walking along the river, looking up at thousand-foot walls. Bryce is a horizontal amphitheater of hoodoos — you are above them, looking down. Pick based on the kind of "wow" you want.
Do I need a rental car or is there a tour?
Day-tour buses leave from the Strip ($130–$220/person in 2026). They hit both parks but stop only at the obvious overlooks — no Angels Landing, no Narrows. A rental car gives you real flexibility for the same total cost if your group is 3+.
Is summer okay?
Zion floor hits 100°F+ in July and August; the Narrows wade becomes borderline dangerous midday. Bryce at 9,000 ft is the cool escape. If summer is your only window, do Bryce and skip Zion's lower elevations after 11 AM.
